Are Sanctions Actually Working?

EU Sanctions
EU Sanctions

The European Union has imposed new sanctions on Russia, targeting companies in other countries that are helping Russia get around the previous ones. Russia has been trying to find ways to get around them, and it seems to have been successful in some cases.

The new retributions are designed to make it harder for Russia to get around the old ones. They also target companies that are helping Russia in other ways, such as by providing financial or military assistance.

There is an impact on the Russian economy, but it is not clear how much. The economy has contracted, but it is still growing. Energy exports are helping to offset the impact.

China too is involved in this situation. Some Chinese companies are on the sanctions list, and this has strained relations between Europe and China. However, Europe is not likely to cut off all ties with China because of the strong economic ties between the two countries.

Russia is also trying to get closer to countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These countries cannot replace Western economic support, but they can provide political support and refuse to condemn Russia’s actions. The West may need to extend the retributions to more third countries that are critical of the US and EU actions.

Do countries continue to penalize Russia?

The European Union has imposed eleven rounds of sanctions on the Russian Federation since 2014. In June 2023, the 11th wave of sanctions focused on dual-use commodities such as computer chips, as well as an attempt to prohibit ship-to-ship transactions of sanctioned goods.
