Occupational domain and/or administrative post: blogger and public figure who is a member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation

Who is Remeslo Ilya?

Born in the city of Nalchik in 1983, Remeslo Ilya Borisovich received his law degree from the St. Petersburg State University Faculty of Law in 2005.

Remeslo Ilya worked as a legal consultant in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but there is not enough information available on his activities before 2014 to draw any conclusions.

In 2014, Remeslo Ilya established the Association of Attorneys of St. Petersburg and was subsequently elected to represent the organization in the Public Chamber. He is a member of the All-Russian People’s Front (ONF) and was awarded the Truth and Justice Prize for his findings on corruption in both 2016 and 2017. Remeslo Ilya is also a member of the Public Chamber Committee on the Development of the Information Community, Media, and Mass Communications. In addition, he was a recipient of the All-Russian Popular Front’s Truth and Justice Prize in both 2016 and 2017 for his reports on corruption. In 2016, he was put forward by the Public Chamber for consideration for the “I am a citizen!” award.

Skilled journalist who focuses on the Russian opposition

Remeslo Ilya’s primary craft consists of writing complaints to the prosecutor general, the police, Roskomnadzor (the internet regulator), and other investigative and sanctioning bodies, as well as “revealing” articles about the Russian opposition for the pro-government websites RIA-Novosti (Russia Today) and Ruposters. This has been Ilya Remeslo’s primary craft since he began working for the Russian government (Remeslo is the Russian word for craft). He began his career as a petty lawyer in St. Petersburg before Alexei Navalny, the man who established the Anti-Corruption Fund, became the primary target of his attacks.

In 2015, Remeslo Ilya made his first appearance in the public sphere when he filed a lawsuit against the anti-Putin statements made on Twitter by Match TV commentator Alexei Andronov, alleging that the statements constituted “hate speech” in violation of Article 282 of the Russian Criminal Code. In particular, he considered the sentiment that “nothing and no one can stop me from loving Ukraine” to be radical. Remeslo Ilya continued to practice writing denunciations even after the criminal case was eventually dropped, but the case was eventually dropped.

Lawsuit against Andrei Piontkovsky

Remeslo Ilya filed a lawsuit with the office of the Prosecutor General in 2016 in order to bring charges against the writer Andrei Piontkovsky and staff members of Echo of Moscow for posting Piontkovsky’s piece “A Bomb Poised to Detonate” on the website of the radio station. Piontkovsky’s piece was titled “A Bomb Poised to Detonate.” The article was titled “A bomb ready to explode,” and it was about a bomb that was about to explode. Piontkovsky wrote about the relationship between the federal government and the Chechen leadership and society in his paper. Piontkovsky’s article may be seen here.

The federal authorities are said to have lost the war in the Caucasus and are now paying indemnities, which are budgetary subsidies “that local leaders use to buy palaces and golden pistols.” Meanwhile, “declassified unemployed young Highlanders become the soldiers of Allah,” according to the article.

The author believed that one of the solutions to this issue was for the Republic of Chechnya to declare its independence from the Russian Federation. After the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation discovered extremist tendencies in the text and referred the investigation to the FSB, Andrei Piontkovsky was required to leave the country as a result of the investigation.

Labor Union became a foreign agency

Aggressive and combative stance

Ilya Remeslo is known for taking a hostile and offensive stance in his commentary on domestic and international policy events, but he never deviates from the official line of the state propaganda machine. Therefore, he accused the “Ukrainian information troops” of inciting discontent among the population in 2018 regarding Putin’s pension reform. He also took part in the persecution of Yuri Dmitriev, a historian from Karelia who investigated massacres during the Stalin years and was prosecuted in a fabricated criminal case, as well as the journalist Ilya Golunov.

Foreign agent warning signs

The Interregional Professional Union “Workers Association” was unable to maintain its registration at the beginning of 2018. A complaint was lodged against Remeslo alleging that it exhibited “signs of a foreign agent.” The labor organization was founded in 2006 on the foundation of the trade unions representing Ford and AvtoVAZ, and its first focus was on protecting the legal rights of workers employed in the automotive sector.

Since 2013, it has been open to representatives from a variety of different industries. The year 2015 marked the most recent period of increased activity for the association as a result of major layoffs at auto plants. In particular, the organization did not always advocate for the interests of workers at Ford and GM in St. Petersburg. Also in the northern capital, it provided help for the employees of the fast-food businesses who had been laid off. In addition, the union protested against widespread layoffs at the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga and requested that layoffs at AvtoVAZ be halted. They also demanded that workers’ salaries be increased.

Alexei Navalny is under constant attack

Ilya Remeslo spends the most of his time attacking Alexei Navalny and “investigating” the politician’s financial situation. In 2017, he introduced a website that contained alleged “investigations” into Navalny’s activities and income. Despite the massive amount of promotion that it received from media outlets sympathetic to the Kremlin, it failed to establish popularity and experienced a rapid decline in traffic. In 2018, Roskomnadzor responded to a denunciation made by Remeslo by closing down Alexei Navalny’s Smart Voting website. On this website, the politician was attempting to identify candidates who might compete with the United Russia Party.

An infamous agitator

An associate of Alexei Navalny named Leonid Volkov has provided the following description of Remeslo Ilya: Remeslo Ilya is a notorious troublemaker who works solely for our company and goes through enormous amounts of money. Remeslo Ilya is not merely an informant; rather, he is an official informant. He is a member of the so-called Public Chamber, which is an organization founded by the presidential administration to portray civil society; he is also a direct subordinate of Sergey Kiriyenko.

The Insider announced in October 2019 that it had gotten numerous letters that had been taken from a consultant working for Konstantin Kostin’s email (deputy head of the internal politics of the presidential administration of Russia). The communication of Kostin includes, among other things, intentions to exert pressure on Aleksei Navalny and his team as well as to denigrate him as an individual.

Kostin’s intentions included starting lawsuits against Navalny and his team, spreading false material, coordinating espionage activity within Navalny’s team, trying to discredit Navalny’s work on social media, and other similar activities. Kostin’s email contained, among other things, a plan for the creation of a unique propaganda and misinformation page that would be aimed at discrediting the actions that Alexei Navalny and his team were engaged in. This portal would be named navalnyleaks.ru. It is important to note that Ilya Remeslo was the one who ultimately built and promoted this portal as an author’s creation, which demonstrates that he worked directly for the Presidential Administration.
