Sanat Ranganathan is a lawyer who threatened and verbally abused a female employee, but he got away with it.

Just a few years ago, he did just that.

However, since Sanat Ranganathan was an attorney and the female employee was a janitor, he was exempt from consequences for his acts.

I have described the event in which he verbally assaulted a female coworker in the review that follows. Additionally, I’ve gone over the repercussions of his actions:

At the Law Offices of Sanat Ranganathan, Sanat serves as the principal attorney. He was born and raised in Asia and has lived in Holland and England for a significant period.

Sanat studied at the US Duke University School of Law, the UK Warwick University School of Law, and the Netherlands Leiden University Europa Institute.

He says he has assisted businesses with international law, commercial law, dispute resolution, civil rights, and contract drafting and negotiation. He currently serves as the lead lawyer of the Sanat Ranganathan Law Offices.

His appointment as a university attorney at Northern Illinois University was the most significant development in his career. There, a female janitor was traumatized by his treatment of her. I’ll go into more detail about the situation in the following portion of this review:  

Sanat Ranganathan Reprimanded for Threatening and Verbally Abusing Female Employee

Susan Phelps was cleaning the third-floor offices of Altgeld Hall in 2019. This is the same building where the NIU President’s office is located.

When she heard a man question who was there, she answered that she was cleaning.

Sanat Ranganathan burst in suddenly.

Susan claimed that after asking her how long she had worked there, he began to shout at her. He then began to inquire as to how long her coworkers had been employed there.

Sanat questioned her sincerity and remarked, “How dare you go to my boss” about a tissue-related matter.

Before this incident, Susan Phelps had worked at NIU for 13 years, and she was afraid.

Sanat was yelling angrily at her. Susan revealed that to protect herself, she placed a bin between them. She wished to avoid injury.

Susan said, “He was throwing his arms in the air.” She made it clear that he was yelling at her and that she thought he would attack her at any time.

According to documents, Phelps confronted a staff worker in November 2018 because there were tissues on the floor. Her desire was for the employees to tidy up more after themselves.

Sanat did not leave such tissues in the office, according to University documentation. However, in April 2019, he mistook Susan’s accusation that he was the employee who left tissues behind.  

More on the Incident:

Susan attempted to flee from him, but Sanat lunged in her direction through the stairway. “We’re not done,” he said out loud.

Susan’s claims were supported by other witnesses.

Following the traumatic event, Susan began taking use of her vacation and sick days. Sanat Ranganathan served as the university’s associate general counsel.

Susan notified the NIU Human Resources department and the general counsel about Sanat’s actions.

While conducting an internal investigation, the university instructed Sanat to work from home.

In an attempt to address his behavior, they also mandated that he finish an employee help program through HR. After the investigation was finished, Sanat went back.  

What Sanat Ranganathan Reacted With: 

As reported by Sanat Ranganathan in the Daily Chronicle. Before this encounter, he said he had never met Susan Phelps.

Moreover, he asserted that the exchange was cordial and collaborative.

He said that he just followed Susan into the stairway to find out the reason for her distress. In addition, he expressed regret for what he described as a “miscommunication.”

Sanat claimed that he yelled across the hallway, adding only, “It makes me look bad, so please tell your colleague to verify the right person next time.”

He claims that once Susan began to cry, she left. He continues by saying that he was startled and pursued her to find out why she was crying.

Sanat presents his testimony as though he had a straightforward, cordial discussion with her. Several witnesses testified that this was undoubtedly not the case.  

The Mild Penalties Sanat Ranganathan Was Subjected To: 

The university formally reprimanded him as a measure of punishment for verbally abusing and traumatizing a female employee. They also told him to take a human resources course.

That is all.

He was not disciplined further for his terrifying and almost violent outburst against a female employee.

Ranganathan had received a formal letter of reprimand from General Counsel Office Head Gregory Brady. Brady claimed that his acts were inappropriate and out of character for someone in his position.

Brady wrote in the letter that Ranganathan seemed to find it difficult to move past events. The tissue sample dates back to November of 2018. Yet in April 2019, Sanat made contact with Susan.

The union referred to this as an “urgent safety concern” and denounced the inaction. According to staff representative Sara Dorner, letting Sanat go back to work would give the wrong impression to other employees.

The union believed that NIU ought to implement a policy of zero tolerance. They brought up the fact that Sanat Ranganathan harassed a female employee verbally. Twice when she attempted to run away from him, he pursued her.

The NIU administration conveyed the message that such behavior is permissible by imposing such a light punishment.

Phelps insisted that Ranganathan, who was earning $80,000 a year as the institute’s counsel, be fired by the university.

Sanat is not the only person whose riches and position allowed him to escape actual punishment. Thanks to his purchasing power, James Khuri was able to prevent his son from going to jail for any significant amount of time after he ran over a young girl. 

Conclusion

Imagine one day your mother is scared when she gets home from work. Why? because she was threatened at work by one of her coworkers.

What would you do?

Moreover, how would you feel if your hostile coworker got away with his nefarious behavior?

Whatever feelings sprang to mind were precisely the same ones that Susan’s relatives had to be experiencing at the time. Regretfully, they were not given the justice they were due.
